This pina colada recipe is super easy. All you need are a handful of ingredients, a blender, and a few minutes of your time. You can easily adjust how fizzy (or not) the cocktail is, which I always appreciate because this is a great mocktail too.
Not like my other favorite summer cocktails - likeWatermelon Margarita, APeach Mint Julep, or a gobletpasture water– This pina colada is chilled. So it is very refreshing to drink on a hot day!

Its name means "stretched pineapple" in Spanish. About the International Bartenders AssociationIBA Official Cocktail List(which means it has an official definition), consisting of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum, mixed or shaken with crushed ice.

- Perfect for summer. It's a great drink for a hot summer day when we're not on vacation. Its frozen texture and tropical flavor make it extra refreshing.

what do you need
You only need 5 ingredients to make this easy pina colada recipe.
See recipe card below for exact measurements and full instructions.
- anana saft– Pineapple juice is the traditional pineapple fruit base for this tropical cocktail.
- Frozen Pineapple Chunks– Frozen pineapple cools and thickens the pina colada. If you don't have frozen pineapple on hand, use 1.5 cups fresh pineapple cubes and 1 cup crushed ice.
- coconut cream– Cream of coconut sweetens the pina colada and gives it a bit of creaminess. Two popular brands are Coco Real and Coco Lopez. Note that coconut cream is not the same as canned coconut cream. Instead of coconut milk, you can usually find coconut cream in store-bought blenders.
- lime juice– Lime juice adds another layer of fresh, bright acidity to the cocktail.
- white rum– Classic pina colada calls for white rum. I like it because it smells so clean.
thisIBA as defined in Pina ColadaIt's simple pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum -- mixed or shaken with crushed ice.
As you can see from the ingredients list above, I also added frozen pineapple chunks so that ice cream is not needed when making the pina colada. I also love the texture of the pineapple.
I also added lime juice. Because I'm a lime juice fanatic, ha! But you'll often see bartenders adding lime juice to their pina coladas because it adds another layer of bright, fresh, tangy flavor. I am definitely a fan!
What is the best rum to drink with Pina Colada?
The classic pina colada is usually made with white rum. However, you can always use a dark or aged rum if you prefer - it will add a more complex flavour.
A variation of the popular Malibu pina colada uses Malibu coconut rum, adding more tropical flavors. (tasty!!)
This drink doesn't need a premium rum, as pineapple and coconut flavors are the biggest players here. But I always stay away from cheap stuff. I recommend using what you personally like to drink.

How to Make Pina Colada
How to make this classic cocktail at home - it's quick and easy!
- Mix the ingredients.Add everything except the rum to the blender. Blend until smooth and thickened.
- Add rum.Pour the rum into a blender and give it a quick whirl until smooth.
- enjoy.Divide between two cups and garnish as desired.

service suggestion
Be sure to serve the pina colada immediately after preparing it, but it's best served frozen.
I like to garnish mine with traditional pineapple slices and maraschino cherries with a fresh lime wedge. I love all the fun, bright colors - I love eating decorations!
Some people like to add whipped cream - we enjoyed this with pina colada in Puerto Rico. But I personally prefer the drink without it.
A colorful drinking straw or a small umbrella is always a fun detail too!

Can I make a big batch of Pina Colada?
Since this is a frozen cocktail and should be served immediately after preparation, you can't make a proper pina colada pitcher like other cocktails (margaritas, For example).
However, if you need to double or triple this recipe to make enough drinks, you can easily do so. Keep in mind that you may need to mix longer and/or make more than one batch, depending on the size of your mixer, etc.
Can I make pure pina colada?
Absolutely. We do this a lot!
To make plain pina colada, simply omit the rum from this recipe. It's still a refreshing tropical drink - and there's something for everyone!
If you're looking for another non-alcoholic pina colada, try thisPink Panther Mocktail.it’s basically a pina colada with strawberries in it and it’s amazing!
